A Standard Visitor visa is the main route for many people visiting the UK temporarily for tourism, family visits, business, short study, medical reasons and other permitted activities. The applicant must meet the visitor requirements and must only do activities allowed under the visitor route.

Family visit is usually a purpose of visit under the Standard Visitor route, not a completely separate visa route. The application should still explain the family visit, relationship, accommodation, finances and reasons to leave the UK after the visit.

Tourism is usually covered by the Standard Visitor route. A tourist visitor should explain the trip clearly, including travel plans, funds, accommodation and ties outside the UK.

You may be able to visit the UK for certain business activities, such as meetings, conferences, negotiations, trade fairs, training, site visits or other permitted activities. You must not work for a UK company or as a self-employed person unless the visitor rules specifically allow the activity.

You may be able to study in the UK as a visitor where the study fits the visitor rules, such as certain courses up to 6 months at an accredited institution. If you want to study for longer, you may need a Student visa, Child Student visa or Short-term study visa for English language study.

You may be able to visit the UK for private medical treatment or certain medical-related reasons. You may need medical evidence explaining the condition, treatment, cost, likely duration and where the treatment will take place.

You may be able to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa if you need to visit the UK regularly. A long-term visa can be valid for 2, 5 or 10 years, but each individual visit must still stay within the permitted visitor stay.

Usually no. A visitor must not work for a UK company or as a self-employed person unless a specific permitted activity or permitted paid engagement applies. If you want to work in the UK, you may need advice under the Work Visa section.

If you want to marry, register a civil partnership or give notice in the UK, you may need a Marriage Visitor visa unless another immigration position applies. If you intend to live in the UK with your partner after marriage, you may need family immigration advice instead.

This depends on your nationality and circumstances. Some people need a Standard Visitor visa before travel. Some may need an ETA. Others may be able to visit without a visa or ETA. Even where a visa is not required, the person must still meet visitor requirements at the UK border.

The documents depend on the reason for your visit and your personal circumstances. Common evidence may include passport, financial documents, employment or business evidence, student evidence, travel history, invitation letters, accommodation evidence and sponsor evidence.

A sponsor can provide accommodation or financial support, but the applicant must still meet the visitor requirements. The application should show the relationship with the sponsor, what support is being provided and whether the sponsor can afford that support.

Common reasons include unclear visit purpose, weak financial evidence, unexplained funds, limited evidence of ties outside the UK, doubts about intention to leave, previous refusals or planned activities that do not fit visitor rules. A refusal should be reviewed carefully before reapplying.
