The Global Talent visa is one of the most flexible routes into the UK for individuals at the top of their field. Unlike most work visas, it does not need a UK employer sponsor — once you qualify, you can work for any organisation, change jobs freely, or work for yourself. Below is a practical overview of who qualifies, how to apply, and what to expect.
Who can apply
You can apply for a Global Talent visa to work in the UK if you are a leader or potential leader in one of the following fields:
- Academia or research
- Arts and culture
- Digital technology
You must also be at least 18 years old.
If you are not eligible for a Global Talent visa, there are other UK work routes available — most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, which we cover separately on our Immigration Law page.
Two routes in: prestigious prize or endorsement
How you apply for a Global Talent visa depends on your circumstances:
- If you have won an eligible prestigious prize, you can apply for the visa directly. No endorsement step required.
- If you have not won an eligible prize, you will first need an endorsement from a UK-approved endorsing body to prove that you are a leader or potential leader in your field. You then apply for the visa using that endorsement.
Applying as the winner of an eligible prestigious prize
To use the prize-winner route:
- The prize must be named on the Home Office’s published list — other prizes awarded by the same institutions are not eligible.
- You must be the named winner of the prize.
The prize-winner list is curated by the Home Office and includes major international awards in each of the three eligible fields. We can check whether a specific prize qualifies as part of a consultation.
Applying through endorsement
If you are not on the prize list, you apply for endorsement first. The endorsing body assesses whether you are a leader (Exceptional Talent) or potential leader (Exceptional Promise) in:
- Academia or research
- Arts and culture
- Digital technology
Each endorsing body has its own evidence criteria. We can help you prepare the strongest possible application bundle for the body relevant to your field.
How long you can stay
You can live and work in the UK on a Global Talent visa for up to 5 years at a time.
There is no limit to how long you can stay in total, but you will need to renew (extend) the visa when it expires. Each extension can last from 1 to 5 years — you choose the length.
Settling in the UK
You may be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after either 3 or 5 years on Global Talent, depending on:
- The field you work in, and
- Whether you applied as Exceptional Talent (faster route to ILR) or Exceptional Promise
ILR gives you the right to live, work and study in the UK indefinitely, and to apply for benefits if eligible.
How to apply
All Global Talent visa applications are made online. The application form differs slightly depending on whether you are:
- Outside the UK and coming to work or settle here, or
- Inside the UK and extending your current Global Talent visa, or
- Inside the UK and switching from a different visa
As part of the application, you will need to prove your identity and upload supporting documents. You may need an appointment at a visa application centre to do this — you will find out when you start the application.
Processing times
After you have applied, proved your identity and provided documents, you will usually get a decision within:
- 3 weeks if you are applying from outside the UK
- 8 weeks if you are applying from inside the UK
A faster decision may be available for an extra fee.
What it costs
The standard application fee is £766.
If you are applying via the endorsement route, the £766 is split:
- £561 when you apply for the endorsement
- £205 when you apply for the visa itself
If you are applying via the prestigious prize route, you pay the full £766 when you apply for the visa.
Dependants
Each partner or child you include in your application pays the same £766 fee.
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
You will also pay the IHS as part of your application — currently £1,035 per person per year of leave. For a 5-year visa with one applicant, that is £5,175 on top of the visa fee.
Why this visa matters
For senior professionals and rising leaders, the Global Talent visa offers something rare in the UK system: flexibility without sponsorship. You are not tied to a single employer, you can move between roles, and the route to indefinite leave is short compared with most work visas.
The trade-off is the evidence burden. Endorsement applications in particular require carefully presented evidence of leadership — including referee letters, recognition outside your immediate workplace, and demonstrable impact in your field. Getting this right at the first attempt saves both time and the cost of a re-application.
How RakLAW can help
We advise applicants across all three Global Talent fields — academia, the arts, and digital technology — at both the endorsement stage and the visa application itself. Typical engagements include:
- Eligibility review and route selection (prize vs endorsement)
- Identifying the right endorsing body for your field
- Preparing the evidence bundle, including referee strategy
- Drafting the personal statement and CV in the format the endorsing body expects
- Visa application itself (initial, extension, or switch from another visa)
- ILR application when you qualify
